How to Stay Cool – UK Heatwave 2018

It has been reported that the current heatwave we have been experiencing across the UK could now be the norm for all future summers. As most people like myself would rejoice at this news of hot summers that can rival with the most popular holiday destinations, it is not all sunshine.

The Environmental Audit Committee has the government and the public that the UK could reach up to 7,000 heat related deaths every year by the time we reach 2050. This is a horrifying amount of people considering the heatwave will only last 3-4 months at a time.

The rise in temperature puts an increased risk on people dying from kidney, cardiac and respiratory disease, at AppLocum we like to encourage anybody suffering from these diseases to please stay safe in these future summer heatwaves.

Our residential Doctor/ Director has given us these tips to share for any future heatwaves and how to keep cool and stay safe:

  1. Keep out of the heat. Stay inside during the hottest time of the day (late morning to mid-afternoon). If you do go out, wear a hat and keep to the shade as much as possible. It’s very important to use a sunscreen of at least factor 15.
  2. If you are travelling by car or public transport always take a bottle of water.
  3. Avoid strenuous activity and limit activities like housework and gardening to the early morning or evening when it’s cooler.
  4. When inside, try to stay in the coolest parts of your home. Keep curtains and blinds closed in rooms that catch the sun. Remember that lights generate heat. Keep windows shut while it’s cooler inside than out and open them when it gets hotter inside. If it’s safe, you could leave a window open at night when it’s cooler. Fans can help sweat evaporate but do not cool the air itself.
  5. Wear loose, lightweight, light-coloured cotton clothing.
  6. Take cool baths or showers.
  7. Splash your face with cold water or place a damp cloth or scarf on the back of your neck to help you cool off.
  8. Drink lots of fluid – even if you’re not thirsty. Limit drinks with caffeine (like coffee and cola) and avoid alcohol as it can increase dehydration.
